Shays is a storied dive bar at the heart of historic Harvard Square. For this project, I set out to honor its old-world, working-class spirit in a fresh, contemporary way. The result was a collection of shirts and hats inspired by the bold lines and timeless imagery of American Traditional tattoo art, echoing the bar’s grit, character, and enduring charm.
The designs celebrate the spirit of Shays with playful, flirtatious scenes of drinking and merriment, a nod to the bar’s reputation as both a neighborhood hangout and a beloved first-date spot. Produced on premium blanks with a meticulously executed seven-color screen print, the merch was created to stand out while reflecting the same care and attention Shays puts into its atmosphere. More than just souvenirs, these pieces are an invitation: come for a drink, stay for the company, and maybe meet someone special.

To complement the merch, I designed custom menus sized for tabletop card holders, giving guests an easy way to engage with Shays’ offerings. The tap lists combine brand elements with a clean, structured layout that highlights the essentials: beer name, style, ABV, price, and a short description. This clear hierarchy keeps the information approachable and easy to scan, while the typography and design choices carry forward the character of Shays in a subtle but memorable way.

The visual language of Shays was extended to Instagram through custom posts and short animations designed to capture attention and drive engagement. Each piece adapts the bold, American Traditional-inspired style to a digital format, bringing energy and personality to the brand online. From playful illustrations to animated highlights of drinks and events, the content reinforces Shays’ identity while increasing visibility and awareness across social channels.
Temporary Tattoos
As part of the American traditional tattoo-inspired graphics, we created custom temporary tattoo sheets to give away to customers. This playful, interactive element extended the design beyond merchandise, engaging the community and spreading brand awareness in a way that was both fun and on-brand.
